Martina Novakova

Martina Novakova (Sofia, 1993) has a master's degree in educational and social theater from New York University (2023), where she studied as a Fulbright grantee. Among her teachers is the creator of verbatim theater - Anna Deaveer Smith, André Lepecki and Joe Salvatore. In 2018 Martina graduated with an MA in Theater Creation, in the class of Juan Mayorga, with an honors diploma from the University "Carlos III" in Madrid. She holds a bachelor's degree in Spanish Philology from the Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski".

Martina currently lives and works as a playwright, director and performer between Sofia and Madrid. She has implemented projects in Bulgaria, Spain, France and New York. In her work, she combines diverse theatrical forms such as documentary verbatim theater, site-specific, audio theater and theater of objects. The topics that she investigates are the preservation of memory, immigration, the presentation of war in theatre, working with different communities and the use of theater as an educational method.

Some of Martina´s more significant projects and achievements are:

The documentary оne-person show "Once You Cross the Ocean", which tells the story of six Bulgarian artists in New York. In 2023 Martina organized and implemented a tour in 8 American cities, presenting the performance to the Bulgarian community.

In 2021, together with her colleague Miguel Valentín, they created the Bulgarian-Spanish theater tandem "Valentín and Novakova" and won first prize at the "Competition for a New Play" of the New Bulgarian University, chaired by Georgi Gospodinov, with the play "A Lesson of Solitude".

In 2021, together with Miguel Valentin, they created "Packaged Audio Guide", an audio performance in the Sofia City Art Gallery, dedicated to the work of Christo and Jean-Claude, directed by Vasilena Radeva.

 

Martina was selected with her play "Panoptikum" by EURODRAM 2020, which she presented at the festival “ProText 10”. Later the project was financed under the "Debuts" program of the National Culture Fund.
